Chapter Twenty-Three
Iâd been up since the crack of dawn.
It was the day of the Bumperâs funeral, but Auntie didnât want to waste one minute of daylight. She wanted to go over to Angelâs Grace to start getting it ready for the awards dinner during homecoming weekend. And her shrill voice flooding the air up the steps and into my room served as a zealous, annoying alarm clock.
âWhy do you have to do it this morning?â I said, yawning. I stumbled into the kitchen to get a caffeine rush to kick start my day. âAnd what are you doing here?â Rhett was sitting at the table, doing his usual. Eating.
âGood morning to you, too,â he said, a lump of food in his jaw.
âBe nice to Rhett,â Auntie said. She was standing at the stove, stirring in a pot. âHe came to help.â
âWhat other reason would he be here?â I asked. âIsnât that his job?â
âRomaine Gabriela Sadie Heloise Wilder!â Auntie said. âBy all that is Holy, I did not raise you to be so rude. Or, condescending.â
âItâs okay, Babet. I know she appreciates me.â
I couldnât help but to smile because that was true.
âWhat are you two up to?â she said.
âI guess Romaine should tell you that.â
âWhat Romaine?â
âI had a flat tire last night.â
âIt was a little more than that.â
I frowned. I didnât want to worry her, plus maybe since it was dark and late, I might have thought I was in more danger than I had been. Even perhaps I thought a little more happened than really did.
âWhat happened, Rhett?â
âShe got ran off the road by some anonymous truck.â
âI didnât get ran off the road,â I said.
âDid she?â Auntie looked at Rhett.
âThatâs what she told me,â he said, smiling. I guess he enjoyed having me and auntie at odds.
âThatâs not exactly what happened,â I said. âI got a flat. And,â I wanted to turn the table on Rhett, âhe showed up out of nowhere. I think he follows me, Auntie.â
âWell, I could think of worse things,â she said.
Rhett winked at me.
âI think itâs kind of scary,â I said.
âYou need to lay off the coffee,â she said and pointed at my cup. âItâs making you paranoid.â
âDid you wake me up this early to abuse me?â
âNo,â she said. âI need your help.â
âNeed your help,â I said at the same time.
âWe need to make a run over to Angelâs Grace. We need to take over the mums and meet the caterer so I can show her the kitchen where sheâll prepare the food.â
âYouâre just now getting the caterer?â I said. âThis close to the dinner?â
âWe had to change caterers. The one I had was hired to do the repast after the services today, too. She said she couldnât do both in one week,â Auntie said.
âWasnât she contractually obligated to you?â I said.
âAnd what did you suggest I tell her?â Auntie said. âThat if she did the repast I was going to sue her for breach of contract?â
âI guess that wouldnât be a good thing.â
We left and went over to Angelâs Grace.
